The Air Jordan Legacy - Part 1 of 5

The year was 1985 and a historic partnership was formed between the greatest basketball player of all time and arguably the greatest sports marketing company with the release of the Air Jordan I in the simple color ways of the Bulls home and away: white/black/red and b/r (the NBA fined MJ for not having enough white on his shoes and of course Nike stepped up to pay his fines gaining valuable media exposure in the process). According to an article in Jet magazine, the XX3/XXIII is the first basketball shoe to be made under the "Considered" ethos, meaning the shoe is made with the environment in mind. It is considered the most technologically advanced Jordan model to date, and according to Gentry Humphrey, the head of the Jordan design team, it may be the last actual Air Jordan.

The shoe was released in three different color ways from January to February, with a limited edition release where 23 retailers around the world sold the shoe, before its national release in February.

Originally released in November 1993, the Air Jordan IX model was the first Air Jordan model release after his retirement and Jordan never played a whole season of basketball with this model. This model was created in the form of baseball cleats that Jordan used when playing minor-league baseball.

Air Jordan IV - Air Jordan 4

The year was 1989, and Tinker Hatfield was back at his tricks storming up an idea for the Air Jordan 4 . How would he top the Air Jordan III? Tinker wanted to get further into performance, rather than some other inspiration that was used on the last three models.

The Air Jordan IV was the first in the line that had an over-molded mesh. The reason for this is, the consumer would think the shoe was made cheap. So what Tinker did was dip the mesh in a soft plastic and blew air through it to clear out the plastic in between.

When the Air Jordan 4 was first released in 1989, people disliked the shoe, said it looked very ugly. Overtime the model grew on a lot of people. Another feature of the AJ IVs was the capability to lace your IVs in 18 different patterns. This gave your IVs your own style. The overall personality of the Air Jordan 4 was saying “get back to work”. Michael was a father and husband for the first time in his life, and since the Air Jordan III was such a luxurious model, MJ and Tinker wanted to bring back to the original draw board.

When the AJ IVs were first released in 1989 they retailed at $110.00. In 1999-2000 when the IVs made another appearance they sold for $100.00,

Also in 2004 they retailed for $110.00. In 2005 Air Jordan did collaboration with Undated, auctioning off the shoes between $1500.00 to $2600.00. Also a AJ 4 Laser package was released with a t-shirt and hat that retailed for $200.00, and later that year Jordan Brand released a black color way of the laser IVs that retailed for $175.00. In 2006 a pair of “Rare Air” IVs released with a price tag of $125.00.

Air Jordan V - Air Jordan 5

The Air Jordan 5 was released in February 1990. Four models of the Air Jordan V were released to the public. Two models which are the Black/Black-Metallic Silver and White/Fire Red-Black had Miss number “23″ on the side. Limited to only 100 pairs each, and were given to unfortunate kids or auctioned off as charity.

The Air Jordan V was the first in the Air Jordan line to have a clear rubber sole. Tinker Hatfield also designed the Nike Marty Mac Fly’s featured in the movie Back to the Future II, they had clear molding which allowed light to come through, and that is were Tinker got the idea from.

Also the AJ 5 was the first time anyone had ever molded foam into a shoe upper.

When you look at the AJ V besides the icy soles, what else do you notice? What I notice is the flames on the side. Tinker came to the conclusion that the way Michael performed was “like a Fighter Plane”. When the AJ 5 was designed, the inspiration was “grey nurse shark” or super marine Spitfire Movie, which is a World War II British fighter plane. To add to the finishing touches of the shoe, Tinker added a reflective 3M tongue with Jump man embroidery.

When the Air Jordan 5 first came out in 1990 they retailed for $125.00. In 2000 when the AJ V made its second appearance they sold for $120.00. 2006 Jordan Brand will re-release the Air Jordan V once again, but this time with a $135.00 price tag.
